Another blown cross+mark!!
Happened @ the oaks today.
Lucky, I just hopped off the bike after a technical climb and I hear pop schhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I'm just glad it didn't let go whilst one of the downhills.. :o
Funny cos Thanh blew his 2 weeks ago!!!! Seems like a recurring thing???

My Cross+Mark is doing the exact same thing! I wonder what Grant has had any complaints made as it seems they may have a little bit of a sidewall problem. Surely so many new bikes cant already be having blown out sidewalls?
How many rides have you done with the tyres Dave?
Whats a good replacement as i dont want to get caught out on a trail with a blow out
is that the front or rear tyre?
do you avoid (ie, go around) rocks so the tyres' sidewalls don't scrape against rocks?
this also happened to my rear larsen tt because i didn't avoid the rocks and stuff..
Dave, do your tyres seems to be cracked, similar to dry rot, a little past the edge of the tread?
I'm scared. I'm probably next

Rear, nah these tyres are only 3 rides old! I'm pretty careful with how I ride, it definitely wasn't hitting alot of rocks at the time!

Nah it's the white crap from the tube.. tyre was wet, cos it rained and I washed it.. it definitely wasn'tcracked or dry. They're pretty fresh, I think!
OMG another one?
lucky it didnt happen on anything bad?

Nah, I was off the bike at the time lol.
I just had to walk like 5km back to the car :\
I wonder if its only the eXCeption series that blow?
Anyone blown a normal $30 cross+mark?
Are they the Exception series? The sidewalls on those models are really thin and don't take much to wear through. I used to have the same problem with IRC Mythos XC tyres when they first came out. 2 or 3 rides and the sidewalls gave way.

Uh huh, they are certainly paper thin. I was expecting more than 3 rides out of them!
Jing, who else has had problems with them?
What tyres do people on here recommend? My front tyre is very thin in one spot and the last thing i want is a blowout next weekend at the Oaks.
Jess, hate to say it but you may have a reason to worry :( Sell them before they get beyond sellable

damm
crossmarks are actually very popular with aussies Hmmmm....
There are many other thinner sidewall tyres but its odd, the time i saw thanh's *johns bike* tyre blowing it wasnt like he was flying down a rock infested descent and rubbing sidewalls. It was just a normal coastingish part of a firetrail? what pressure were you guys running? Is it possible that the tube blew and due to the thiness of the sidewall the sidewall blew along with the tyre?
i think you may be on to something jing
i think i was running 35-40psi when the tyre popped
i don't have much confidence in them but will keep you guys posted if this new set pops
mine is yet to blow a tube/tyre. It does however have a spot where the sidewall appears very worn and may blow out soon. I have been meaning to take a pic and ask peoples opinions on here, i just havent had time. I will take a pic of it tomorrow and post it up in this thread for some ideeas.
I run about 40psi in mine as i want to try and avoid pinch flats. Could this be a possible problem?
i recommend you to just sell up if you guys are not too sure. You can sell working tyres but you cannot sell blown tyres. Due to popularity of crossmarks it will be snapped up without too much difficulty i reckon on ebay.
yeah i think i would sell them
any recommendations for a tyre with thicker sidewalls?
larsens? they roll awesome and the sidewalls seem pretty trust worthy

Just dont buy anything in the eXCeption series..
I was using Maxxis Monorails and never had any problems with mine (and man I wasn't kind to them either), but max id run mine at is 30psi.
For thincker sidewalls, my bike shop guy runs LUST tyres with tubes in them. The downfall to this is the massive weight (LUST 2.35 Maxxis Ignitors are 800gm plus your tube) of running both.
Just a thought :)

40psi is heaps. Try 35psi and then try 32 if it works out for you. If you don't weight much and are pretty smooth you could get away with lower pressures.

i have a set of exceptions that i've totally trashed over 2 years with many many KM's....rocks, wet, gravel.... you name it and they are still going strong.
I's say that there are a few bad batches or you hit rocks hard core. Do your wheels hang anywhere near your car exhaust..... out of interest? or rub on bikes during transit?

I have been told there is huge gains in tration with lower pressures but i have wanted to get away from flat tyres. Slippery tyres i can live with, flats i cannot :)
My bike is always in the boot when in transit and the front tyre is behind the seat so its not like its a transportation type problem.
I think i may just have to sell them and get something new before the weekend. time to hit up the bike shops i think :D I wish the Anthem had the same front axle as i would have used the Anthems wheels and tyres to try out the tyres on it before i outlay any cash
This my Larsen TT, my Crossmark is not much different. Its a tyre.. They cop abuse, its not going to stay brand new for ever. Luck of the draw lads. Unfortunately maxxis seem to be susceptible to sidewall damage, I havnt had the same problems with folding Nevegals.
Depressing and expensive it maybe, If we want lightweight folding racing tyres its gonna happen. I think it is due to low pressures. Whether it is a bad batch ? Don't know.

Well yeah but mines 3 rides old.
I ran 40psi like half the blokes here.. maybe thats the problem.. I'll run 30ish next time. I just hate pinch flats!
Mine is 5 rides old.
I dont mind if its normal, perks of buying something i knew nothing about i guess, but it doesnt make me feel any better knowing that the expensive tyres on my bike wont last me more than a month of riding before i basically need to throw to them away

You could try normal crossmarks Brad?
Doubt the sidewalls are as thin, as they aren't marketed as a lightweight tyre.

High rollers or ardents! lol
Second the lowering of tyre pressure - run something between 30-35psi.

these tyres are fine if used for their intended purposes.... XC. no tyre will fare well against sharp rocks or to high a PSI over teh rough stuff.
like i mentioned- i've ran a set of exception series Xmarks and they have outlived many of my tyres! brilliant.
i firmly believe that its luck of the draw with tyres.......
now if i could only get tyres that stopped pinch flats :D

no problems so far, ive found them to be good and fast... that said ill probably be next!
ps I run 40psi in mine....
stole the front tyre (different sized axles) and complete rear wheel/tyre from Andrea's Anthem tonight so will try some SB8's this weekend
a friends runs these on the front and back of his Trek fuel 8 and he dosen't seem to have any issues, and rides the oaks nearly every weekend, but then again he's not an aggressive rider, that could be a reason why his has lasted over 6months with no issues

IMO Kenda SB8's wont give you much grip on the Oaks

Shocking about these tyre problems guys. I'm not impressed at all. Bad batch I say.
SB8's aren't designed for grip, but speed. I love the one I have on the back of the Reign.
I've managed to drift the bike a couple of times, feels so good when you get it right, and braking gets a lot worse, but it forces you go lean in more and grow some balls.
