An event that I did last year for MS Charity, I think it's a sister event to the City to Gong.

Link To Event (http://www.clubsonline.com.au/customdata/index.cfm?fuseaction=display_image_listing&CategoryID=3754&itemLayout=1&headerselector=3&OrgID=3381)

Maybe an event for the fixie crew to consider!

Which ride will you be doing Jarod?

50km from North Sydney. The original and still the best.

Depending on my fitness at the time I might ride to the start line from the Inner West.

It's an awesome event to ride single/fixed by the way. I'd only just started riding at the time of the last one, never more than 10 ks, and I was fine on the Lager. The lack of traffic lights etc mean that since you don't stop, you don't burn any energy mashing a big gear up to speed.

Was pretty fucked when some n00b decided to stop on a hill right in front of me, though. Right in Homebush when everyone was getting really bunched. Forced like 30 people to walk up a hill because they lost momentum :p

I'm doing the Liverpool route this year, just for something different.

And as far as I know as soon as you pass the finish you're no longer part of the event. So you could ride anywhere you want as a member of the public.

I am riding the Trance mate. I have been told that once you are out of the city its not exactly road bike friendly as you are on cycle paths with several other hundred people and children who have no idea. I have no plans on having to go offroad with the Pinarello to dodge anyone so the MTB is what i will be riding :D

Just got back home from the Spring Cycle. Took the Salsa and started at Liverpool (and I was forever grateful for the large sections of tailwind). Did the extra loop around homebush and rode home as well. 75kms on a single speed ain't too shabby.

I rode to the train station at 5am this morning, then rode the North Sydney leg and the extra 10k's. my arse feels like paintball target now thanks to DaveoAU pressuring me to go the extra 10K's. He's on a friggin carbon roadie and I'm on my Stumpy!

I tried to ride home but my arse said no!

And I had the head wind most of the way along with people who don't know how to keep left if they're slow. That would be you Porsche Centre people!!!!!

Oh and I had a blue with a cop who asked me to move. I was clipped in and was having trouble unclipping and he didn't get that I couldn't just move.

Tell me it was with the dick head cop that was at Five Dock? I think it was the corner of Great North Road and Wareemba Street? That dockhead caused Andrea to fall off her bike! had he not been a cop i would smacked the hell out of him!!! Andrea was riding down the hill clipped in and he pretty mcuh jumped out in fromt of her and told her to stop. Obviously you just dont stop when your clipped in and obviously Andrea ended up on her side. Hurt her knee, damaged the bar tape, shifter/brake and pedals :(

As hypocritical as this sounds it was a nice ride but ridiculous at the same time. I was expecting it to be a shit fight, but not that much of a shit fight. Way to many people who had no idea on how to ride. Nobody stayed left causing a 2 hour ride to be a 4 hour ride, the wind sucked. Average speed of 14kph over 40ks just sucked arse! I wont be back.

Having said that though, the scenery was awesome and it was a nice route they used. Unfortunately the wind caused me to totally miss the ride over the Harbour Bridge which i was looking forward to as its not every day you can ride it like we did today. Riding over Darling Harbour and through the city was great. Some poor woman riding down from the Palesade Hotel in the rocks got a flat and damn does 120psi of road tyre make a hell of a noise!

Can people PLEASE tell me the Sydney to Gong ride is not like todays ride!!!!!!

From the sounds of today's ride its pretty much the same, i didn't do the spring cycle for the reasons you basically gave...

Heading into waterfall it turns into walk your bike to Woolongong which is annoying. And the roads aren't closed all the way so you are sharing the road with cars n stuff...

What you said plus one.

My cop was the one on Victoria rd. I had to move over to the right since all the slow people were causing chaos and people were having accidents all over place. Since I was clipped in, I couldn't react quickly enough.

I moved to the right of the traffic island to stop with my left foot out and he had a go at me despite the fact I actually stopped behind the line of the intersection while every other dick kept filling the intersection blocking traffic.

I won't do it next year.

I did have fun waving at a highway patrol with no hands on the bars on the wrong side of the road! Hmmmm $56 per violation...... no lights, no reflector, no bell, wrong side of the road, no hands on the bars, riding negligently, riding furiously, riding recklessly, total $448 of I don't give a f#$%

We started at like 7am and still had a massive queue once we got to the RHP... But given your on a roadie if you started as soon as you could you would probably make it before.

Once into the park you chill behind motorbikes so you can't go too fast and then at the bottom of the descent is lunch and everyone congregates so you lose all momentum and have to climb back up....

there are 10,000 people on the ride to the gong...

It sounds a bit like you guys made the wrong choice to ride clipless while you aren't 100% confident with using them in a group.

The wind predicted for this weekend was enough to stop me getting involved in this years ride but i've done it a few times in the past. If you go into it expecting to be a boy racer and not get messed around a bit by inexperienced riders, especially if you're not starting at the earliest time possible, you're obviously going to be in for a rude shock.

The Gong Ride is traditionally a windy ride. Everyone wants to leave early to avoid the wind and the cycling traffic. Unless you are in the first 100-200 at the start area and are able to stay there you are going to encounter the same issues you did today.

In both events i've spoken to police while being stopped at the top of descents, at intersections, etc and never had a negative experience. A cop told someone to stop at a corner and they crashed because they couldn't unclip! I don't think that's the cops fault. You need to ride for the conditions (lots of inexerienced people on public roads) and obviously she wasn't. Sorry. As for hitting him, if he wasn't a cop he would have been a regular pedestrian and had right of way wouldn't he? Getting told off because you can't mix it with the other riders or unclip quick enough! Again, not the cops fault. It's an event that is demonstrating cycling to the car loving public. Even if you are in the right it's sometimes better to swallow your pride as a representative of the cycling community.

A cop told someone to stop at a corner and they crashed because they couldn't unclip!

Right about now i would say keep your comments to yourself, you werent there to see it so you cant comment. She was riding to the conditions, about 5kph if your lucky as we were entering an intersection which had obvious Police presence which on this ride meant your coming up to a major intersection.

My girlfriend was basically in the intersection when he stepped out in front of her and told her to stop leaving her nowhere to go but fall over. I dont care who you are, you would have fallen off your bike. The cop was a fuckwit who didnt even offer a hand to help her up which is what pissed me off more then anything. If it were you Grant who knocked someone off their bike and you did nothing to help the situation i would do the same to you, but i am sure you would lend a hand and help them up. That is what pissed me off more than anything else.

Don't forget you're posting on a messageboard, so someone is going to comment. In this case it's me. :)

It still sounds like her fault. Not being confident using clipless pedals in a group situation. Once it becomes a natural thing for her to unclip without having to think about it you'll realise that she could have stopped without falling over. I doubt that most people who are comfortable with their pedals and brakes would have fallen off in dry conditions.

I would not be surprised if the cop wasn't even watching the cyclists. He would probably have been watching for larger, heavier vehicles that could do lots of damage to the cyclists. I've had this happen on these rides as well. It's not uncommon. I guess the other option is let the cyclists get run over or block traffic forever.

It might not be nice that he didn't help her get up; he might have even laughed as watching a cyclist topple over because they can't get out of their pedals is pretty funny and most cyclists have a laugh at those that do it; but perhaps he had to continue watching for traffic while the large group of surrounding riders could have helped her, which i'm guessing they were nice enough to do?

ido09s
27-09-09, 09:06 PM
none of the above, you werent there so stop assuming. All cars were stopped in both directions and the cop wasnt looking in the direction of the cars at all. As i have already said, i am not so much pissed off at the fact Andrea didnt get her foot unclipped fast enough, i am pissed at the point the fat fuck stood there and didnt even ask is Andrea was ok or offer to help her up. He was just a fuckwit HWP cop who was ignorant as fuck! I even spoke to two cycle Police who reckon he was extremely rude for not helping her up

I had an enjoyable day too. Some of you take it too serious. Take it for what it was today - a charity ride promoting the cause and cycling. I rode clipless too but after today's experience I wont be doing it (as in riding clipless) next year. I'm not blaming anyone, it's the nature of the ride. Gotta analyse your actions too, shit happens, get on with it. She stacked it, cop didnt help, big deal - bigger fish to fry mate.

so i assume from all of this that you've never fallen over while clipped in?

When i first got mtb clipless pedals i fell a few times practising in the backyard, but didn't ride a track or on the road with them until i had the tension sorted and was confident i could make an emergency escape.

I've definitely had times where i've needed to make an emergency escape in the last 13 year of riding clipless but have only been stuck twice. Fortunately neither was on the road.:)

Sorry you think i'm full of it, but you're entitled to your opinion. It's the internet, i'll deal with it. :)

My issue with the cop while I was clipped in was that he wanted me to move sideways about a foot. I was stopped and unclipped on one side only. He was getting impatient within seconds since I didn't just move. So I sat there and told him I will move once I'm unclipped. He didn't like it so I sat there and pointed to my foot and showed him that I was in fact connected to the bike and can't just move sideways in a split second the way he expects me to.

I'm not confident clipped in but I can clip out quick enough to stop falling 99% of the time. The 1% of the time, I found the angle of my foot doesn't allow me to unclip at all.
I thought I'd try clip ins for this ride when I usually ride on flats. That was my mistake.

Wow sounds like most of you had a pretty shitty ride. I don't think it's a ride that should be done clipped in or even on a road bike for that matter, the ride is just too slow for that.

I went in with the expectation that it was a family fun ride with once a year riders so I knew that there'd be an issue with slow riders and people who didn't know road riding rules/etiquette. I made sure that I started relatively early and was cruising (carefully) for the first 25km until I was with a bunch of riders around my speed and just stuck with them to the end. Obviously I had my fair share of incidents but overall I actually had a really enjoyable ride.

I'll be back next year with a bunch of friends, taking it even less seriously and just enjoying the ride for what it is.

Up to the individual of course, but I was on possibly the most frustrating bike possible. Clipless, roadie and singlespeed so that I got screwed any time I got stuck behind slow people on a hill. Also, I was riding with a mate who was on an MTB with knobblies and who hadn't been doing much riding lately, so I was doing a bit of hanging around waiting.

What I'm trying to say is, much like life, it's all what you make of it. In large groups, don't clip back in until you're moving and pedal/paddle one footed for a little while. If you're stuck behind someone, just suck it up and grind for a while. If you need to wait around for a while, look around you at all the different bikes and people riding them.

I think alot of you guys have taken it out of context, as has been seen by Grants need to start a separate thread about it.

My girlfriend stacked, big deal. She has built as bridge and gotten over it. But as you have all said, its a day for beginners and if the cops patrolling this ride cant understand that and mashall the event accordingly then they shouldnt be there.

Seems most of you would be happy for the cop to knock grand mothers and 8yo kids off their bikes as it would be no different to what happened to my girlfriend. Some of you are fathers on here. How happy would you be if the cop pulled out in front of your child and knocked them over? I guess its just to bad because your on a family fun ride and your kid should know how to "use their equipment" properly or not ride at all. Maybe i should have barrelled a few people over for not being able to "use their equipment properly"

As i have already said, Andrea does need to learn how to do emergency stops and unclip, my gripe is with the fact he didnt care what he had had a part in, or his want to help out.

You guys always say a rider has as much right to the road as a car, well hows about leaving the scene of an accident and not rendering help. Do you simply drive on past a bike rider that has fallen off his bike or do you stop to render assistance. ITS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE ON AND NOT RENDER ASSISTANCE in case you werent aware and any member of the public can be booked for not helping out.

Yeah i am pissed, pissed at the fact the cop didnt help out by simply giving a helping hand to get Andrwea off the pavement, not at the fact Andrea didnt unclip in time.

The last time my girlfriend came for a ride with me she had a stack (her own fault) made me sad and angry that the other guy just rode on . I think the worst part was when we were bandaging her knee my bike got stolen!!!

Can people PLEASE tell me the Sydney to Gong ride is not like todays ride!!!!!!

oh shit...how did i miss all the action in this thread...who would of thought a City of Sydney Spring Cycle thread could be this exciting!

i call BS on this! as if anyone could fall over in an event like this
And BS you would of laid the smack down on him if he wasnt a cop. you would of only king hit him if he was 3ft tall and had the build of a pair of chopsticks...now you are the blow ass my friend :P :D

Pics of incident or it didnt happen...or how does it go on BMU? something like Pics or Ban? :loling:

in all seriousness...might be an idea to get ur missus some knee and elbow pads(even a full face maybe :p) for instances like these. nothing wrong with wearing protective equipment...i wear body armour when i DH. when my missus started MTB-ing the first thing i got her were elbow and knee pads. i took her to majura pines and we got good wear out of the pads. So maybe invest in some pads for Andrwea, nothing worst than your GF whinging about her scraped knee.

oh shit...i forgot she rides roadie.

what kind of world are u living in? ffs get with reality, if u wanted assistance you should of called the ambos! Cops dont carry first aid kits, they only have guns for shooting the baddies! :D

may i suggest 2 laps of manly dam to ease the pain? or maybe some laps of Appin with some Rotorburners?

if thread could have songs playing in the background while you viewed them...i think this song would suit this thread appropriately...

Everybody Hurts by R.E.M

and lyrics for those of who dont know the song

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

The picture of the cops reminded me.

When Dave and I were waiting at the train station, there were about 8 cops on bikes riding two abreast up the hill.
One was struggling with his clip ins and didn't ride straight, swerved and came soooo close to taking out his mate.

I would have pointed and laughed.

I'm pretty dissapointed with some of the stuff going on in this thread. What is this? Farkin?!

I can see both sides.

Brad's girl went down, yes he called the copper some bad names but he's obviously going to be protective of Andrea (I would be).

The attacks on Brad though are not necessary around here.
