View Full Version : Mt Stromlo Picture Thread
There's no such thread for mt stromlo so here it is :D
My mates and I went to stromlo on saturday and sunday. I have to say it was pretty awesome here, it has everything. It feels like an olympic venue, you rock up, massive carpark, there are signs showing riders the map of the forest and the xc loops available.
We went up via the left hand side of the forest (trails are called fenceline and <something> switchbacks) and omg the switchbacks are tiring. It reminded me of appin but worse because it's a steady climb, long and there are so many sharp turns!
Once we got to the top, we went down roller coaster, skyline, luge and the home trail back to the carpark. We did this twice (the second time we drove up :D )
I could go on but enough of me blabbering, here are the pics, hope you guys enjoy.

7 signs, main big one is the map of the forest, the other 6 signs has information regarding xc loops you could do.

From here on, I started to record videos as it was flat for abit before we hit the mad down hills. I'll post the videos once they're ready for viewing.
Great pics. Did you go over the see-saw?
I didn't see a see-saw so I guess we weren't around that area.
Yeah if you were on the track you wouldn't have missed it. It's a great spot. I can see some bits in your photos that i haven't ridden before, and a lot of others that are familiar.
There were quite abit of work happening around the area, the only thing we've found were logs with ramps which we just gunned up and down lol.

oh stromlo. I will see you soon.
My rock climbing mentality demands that I always have a project, before I left canberra it was making it up cardiac on a single speed. I almost had it, but alas, now my legs are flab.
One day...

Almost making it all the way from the base to the DH bridge up Cardiac climb on a SS without dabbing is very impressive.

if u were on rotorburn, the next 100 post would say something along the lines of "do a search" :loling:
Majura and Sparrow are of main concern.
I've got over 2000 pics (gopro wide on continuous picture mode every 5 sec) lol
but yeah I've got some videos but it requires editing so I'll post that up as soon as I have done some editing.
I have to admit, i played with my camera and didn't realise I pressed DELETE ALL !! I've managed to recover most except for two sick videos. One video was like 10min+ run from the top of the mountain all the way to the carpark (rollercoaster, skyline, luge, then home trail). I was really gutted but I know that I will go to stromlo again!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I had this video, I think it will really excite alot of members on here, hahahah.
less talk, more editing! I wanna see these vids damn it lol
i'll play

I love stromlo!!!!!
Damn ... cant view your pics from work :(
I was down there on the weekend as well (as posted in Where did you ride Today)
https://www.photoshop.com/express/index.html?user=mrbenspics&galleryid=4e375cf3f03d49caba44656b909eadd3&wf=share&trackingid=BTAGC <-- Same link to some photos (and some off topic)
Found the See-Saw.. hit it a bit too quick and had to baulk on the end waiting for it to drop !! :)
We did 3 loops.. the first up the left which everyone seems to do, and the Skyline run down... even had the girls hooting and hollering on that one.
2nd loop we went out the right hand side, Slant 6 and then around the back of the mountain to play on Party Line and Double Dissolution (niiiiiice)
3rd Loop was back to Slant 6 but then up Blue Tongue and Heart Breaker climb to the top of the mountain.. was not too bad but finally had to drop to the little ring for the last pinch of Heart Breaker.. then down the back of the mountain again for some of the blue runs. (Pork Barrel, Slick Rock, Deep Creek etc)
Felt pretty shagged by the time we got back to the car park, but this place is sensational with the trails in imacculate condition and top class facilities on hand.
The wife loved it so much she has vowed us to return there shortly which I cant complain about.
Put this place and Sparrows on your MUST DO list.. and make Sparrows Sooner rather than later too !!
The Stromlo website has a map thats worth checking out too. http://www.stromloforestpark.com.au/
WANT!! - Need to get there ASAP!
need to do this soon for sure.
A compilation of amateur videos recorded at Mt Stromlo using gopro wide.
I've put a title of the trail in the movie so hopefully they're right.
We basically rode from the observatory, across the mountain to echinda gap - rollercoaster - skyline - luge - duffy descent which takes us back to the carpark.
Excuse the first 4-5min, I was tired so it was a slow ride for me :D
I didn't bother with music and not all footages are from the same day but hopefully this will give you members some insights on what stromlo has to offer.

Man that looks like heaps of fun. Can't wait to go there.
If you guys watch part 2, you will see that my friend has a flat and I put up a msg about a deleted scene from the video. Well I recovered it but it was corrupted so you will notice audio/video imperfection.
The video is on youtube and is linked below. I have changed the audio to a random track from youtube's library (it's still processing so if you're viewing the video, just mute your speakers)
Video is basically from mid skyline -> first half of Luge

They look very un technical if you ask me. Fun though never the less I'm sure.
Yeah, what we've done is not that technical but was fun.
We've done about 1/7 of what's available at stromlo. The runs we did were green and blue but there's also black (single and double diamond) and a DH track.
The tracks are directional so you have blue and black runs going uphill.
WANT!! - Need to get there ASAP!
Ben, the boys and i are headed down on the weekend of the 25/26 for some DH and XC action, you can join us if you want...ill be bringing my glory 8 as a loaner bike if anyone wants to give DH a go
will you be doing any shuttles ? :P
LOL! hell yeah! imagine doing pushies up stromlo! LOL
man they were cool vids.. the trail will look awesome when those trees grow!
Nice vids... The Skyline/Luge run is sensational :)
Between that, the green run from Wombat Junction to Homeview, Party Line and Double Dissolution there is sooo much pedal-free-goodness that the climbing is a good chance to recover ;)

Reasonably untechnical, but they flow, they are fast and are sure to put a grin on your face and they are XC tracks.
Really not that different (from the vids I have seen) from Whakarewarewa Forest..
.. but there is plenty harder/techier stuff to be had around the mountain ..

Tai, out of interest can you ride the track that will be used for the DH World Champs in 7 weeks time or is that now off limits or still being finalised?
is this cardiac arrest?

If that's what I think it is, some of the World Cup XC guys were carrying their bikes up that last year... could be wrong though.
I believe that rock garden is part of the DH track, not Cardiac Arrest. There are one or two bits like that on CA but not quite as bad.
Thats not cardiac arrest, thats death trap!!! lol

Unless that is taken at a really strange angle, it is part of the DH track.
Every part of cardiac arrest is climbable, albeit in a women's-specific gear. The rock garden has been set up so that all the rocks can either be ridden around, or so that you can get a wheel over. The first rule is to never lose momentum.
I find that the best method for getting through such stuff is to not allow yourself to take your feet out. Falling doesn't really hurt, even onto rocks, and even if you come to a dead stop up against a rock, you can 99% of the time get going again without putting a foot down.

yep thats the rock garden at the top of the dh track... look mellow in that picture... much killer than that.

You must be part mountain goat :p
Lost that momentum thing many many times trying to get up it.

I've only been up CA twice, but i can't think of any section that has a line around the main track except for the little gap towards the end where there is a bridge on the left. There are a number of rocky outcrop switchbacks while climbing that i find very difficult to get over and have not beaten all of them. I bash the cranks up that climb more than the rest of Stromlo combined.

Try it on a 29er. Embrace the kool aid. Also, try it when weighing 65kgs, I find it helps with that climbing thing. Living 5km away was also a bonus.

3 guys, 3 bikes, 1 car. So much win that day. :)
So second decent dirt ride since the mont and i managed to hit up Stromlo!
Sorry no pics of us riding, it was just way too good!
End result, I realised i no longer have the power in my legs to make up a decent hill, all i can do is grind my way up. I can't tolerate lactic acid in the legs anymore..... basically i suck now. lol. Here is proof.
