What shorts does everyone like? The following are my impressions of the ones i've used.

Fox Base
You pretty much get what you pay for with these shorts. They are the basic Fox model and it shows after a few rides. Crappy elastic around the waist with a drawstring that doesn't tighten enough when the elastic starts to go. The padding is very average, essentially just a bit of foam. The pockets are alright but don't have any closing tabs or zippers so i don't trust putting anything in them. The outer shell is a nice cut, not too tight or too baggy. I rarely get them caught on the seat. I've had my pair for more than 5 years and i always regret wearing them half way through a ride. They are okay on the trainer though.

Fox Mid Ranger
These are an interesting pair of shorts. The chamois is very basic, like the Base model, but they must be cut differently or maybe use a different density foam because they are much more comfortable than the Base model. The outer fabric feels a bit thicker and is nice for a mtb short. The pockets are okay and at least one has a velcro tab, but it'sa very small tab. The outer shell is much baggier than the Base shorts and i get these caught on the seat every now and then. The drawstring is okay and stretchier than the Base shorts with a nice high back to stop dirt and stuff getting down them. So overall, although they are comfortable, there are better shorts out there.

Fox High Frequency
These are an excellent short. The outer shell is a nice shape, the cargo style pockets close properly, the waist straps are good and the padding is good. Initially the padding was excellent but i went through a 6 month stint where they just weren't that comfortable. I don't know why it happened but they went back to feeling pretty good again. While i like the cargo pockets the fabric is a little thin and wears thin fairly quick if you use them every ride. The back doesn't seem as high as on the Mid Ranger model and they ocassionally get caught on the seat but not very often. They've been great shorts over the last few years.

Netti Shy Shorts
I had these a good 10 years ago so i can't comment on the more recent models they have but these had a very poor lining and chamois, the outer shell was extremely thin and they were basically just a crap pair of shorts that didn't last very long.

Oakley Trail
Similiar to the Fox High Frequency shorts but feel like they are made to a much better quality and are a bit baggier. The liner and chamois is significantly better than the Fox shorts. These are great shorts for longer rides as they stay comfortable for a while. Zippers up the legs help to keep things cool and they have decent pockets. The legs are a bit longer than the Fox models and this places the pockets too far down for me to fell comfortable riding with stuff in them. The only thing i don't really like is the velcro fly, but it works okay.

Troy Lee XC Air
These shorts feel absolutely brilliant for about two hours then they seem to turn on you and really start ro rub the wrong places. The outer shell is much heavier than anything else i've used except for some old Fox MX shorts that didn't have padding. One pocket that isn't very roomy means you can't carry too much. They feel much lighter on than they do just holding them.

Bib knicks
I don't own a 'nice' pair of bib knicks yet. I've got two pairs of Formaggio bib knicks that i wear on the road bike or for longer events as they are much more comfortable than baggy shorts and they don't slip down like knicks. They are easy to slip gel or energy bar wrappers up the legs too. I'll be looking for a pair with little pockets on the legs though.

Torpedo7 had a quick sale last week for their Fox Baseline shorts. My order should be arriving today. They look similar in length to the Zephyrs.

Fox Sergent

I have an older style of these, they look slightly different but still the same features.
Very light material, breathes very well and is hard wearing (has taken a few offs quite well)
Adjustable inside rear waistband helps with fat days, but being a very stretchy short to begin with, its all set and forget.
I chuck my iPhone in 1 of the pockets and dont notice it while riding, they even feature a nifty audi cable route thing on the inside to keep cables away from cranks.
They also feature a removable pair of chamios which means you can wear the shorts casual or for action.

The bad...
I found that after a few rides the padding deflates and doesn't seem asm 'cradley your nadsy' as per new also, the velcro on 3 of the pockets has torn.

I paid $70

Fox Campus:

Umm...they look like an old table cloth or the same material used in a tweed hat/jacket of some old english man.

Makes for a nice casual pair of riding shorts when going around the block etc.
Removable inner, reasonable padding.

Only fault so far are the pockets. The side ones have a mesh inner and tear easily.

Fox Sergants. Still rocking them, love them more than my Enduras or RaceFace ones.

grabbed the newest version of the Sergent (which look a lot like the ones Kev posted) and like them more than the old ones. The chammois is still shit, but not as shit. but the actual short is much better. looks more casual too!

I have an order coming from Ground Effect with some actual knicks so will see how they go!

I grabbed a pair of Ground effect Supersonics (http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-SON-SHO.htm) as my first pair of proper Knicks and so far and am really liking them. Im wearing the Sergents over the top for modesty but these feel great. Don't sit weird, or feel like they are on, with their normal liner shorts you still felt like you were wearing them but these feel like nothing at all (how much does this sound like a feminine hygiene product ad) I am probably about to buy a few more pairs!

At the same time i bought Ristretto (http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-RIS-WIN.htm) for wearing in Winter and the thing is amazing, kept be nice and toasty commuting the last few days!

Once again highly recommend the gear from Ground Effect.

Got a pair of IXS Devon shorts in the mail from CRC the other day. Went for a quick ride with them the moment I got home from work...

I've had 3-4 different Fox shorts in the past (and still have 2 of them), they have been reasonable, but I have never liked the fit of them - one seemed to shrink (or I got fatter) and the another pair felt too baggy - catches on your knees and exposes my ass crack a little in extreme cases.

I wanted a pair of shorts that looked relatively casual - after a while browsing CRC, I decided to take the risk and get a pair of IXS Devon shorts. I can't say I have ever seen them available locally, so was not so sure on sizing/fit and just got the size I am used t0.

First observations:
-Shorts have a slight stretchy feel to the fabric. Time will tell if they will last or if they loose their elasticity and become all saggy. But overall - they feel very comfortable.
-Two zippers on the front expose air vents - have not tried them as yet.
-They come with a glasses/lense cleaning cloth attached to to the inside of the cargo pocket. Cool but pointless IMO.
-Side pockets are perfect - I had my phone in one pocket and it stayed in the right spot rather than slipping down the side of my leg like other shorts.
-Like most removable inners, they button in - but I had trouble keeping them attached - the moment I moved about, they would un-button. I don't really mind though. Padding seems ample and firm - but just like the stretchy fabric mentioned above, time will tell if they last.
-It was a pretty cool evening - so can't really comment on the sweat-wicking as yet.

~$100 @ CRC.
