View Full Version : DIY: Headset removal and Install (with homemade tools)
Ok, so I know alot of you do build up your own bikes, I also know that the headset is somewhat of a girls with genital warts... you'd rather give her to someone else to do.
Here's a quick guide on how to make the tools and install/ remove the headset including the crown race.
First part is the tools (Install and removal when my new headset comes)
Above is a photo with the tools I made a while back. The one closest tool is for headset removal. Pretty much get a thin walled steel pipe no bigger than 1" (1 1/8" if your doing 1 1/2" headsets) and using an angle grinder, cut 4 slices into one end. Put it on something solid and slightly flair the end with the cuts out.
The other tool is effectivly a press. Now a headset shouldn't be hard to press in, mine looks alittle prettier than most (I also decided to weld one end) but pretty much get a short length of threaded rod of decent thread size, 2 small bits of steel plate (or something else solid and 3 nuts (to suit the threaded rod)
Drill a hole through the peices of plate and assemble with one peice of plate at one end held in place by 2 nuts, and the other one freeballing at the other with the nut on the outside.
I think you can kinda gather how it all works, but i'll post up an install and removal guide when I get my new headset.
This really isn't to hard, my only advice is to take your time, make sure that the cups are sitting in square. You can do both at the same time if you like, I do one at a time just because I dont have the patients to square up both.
Did a similar trick when building up the Reign.
Installation was a similar process to you. Very tedious and time consuming. Only issue was that I had the frame resprayed - so there was a lip of paint going into the head tube. Had to use a Dremel with a fine sanding piece to shave a fraction of a millimetre off.
Nice one Kev!....homemade ftw!

Grease! Grease is your friend!
Put grease on the inside of the head tube and the outer edge of the cup.

I used to install head sets with a couple of chunks of wood and a bench vice, always worked and I never had to make anything.
