View Full Version : Repco S/S Build
Thought I'd jump on the singlespeed build thread bandwagon and post up the progress of my own little project. I've been working on and off on this for the past couple of months and is still very much a work in progress.
The initial purpose for this project was to learn about bike mechanics and to build a bike to replace my Mongoose bmx as a beater bike I take to the shops/gym. Anyhow, enough history here's the pics...
Here's how I picked it up (for not very much at all :D) and after a quick hose down. It doesn't look too bad here but there was not a single working part and any exposed metal was covered in rust.

Ripped everything off the bike - cranks were a bitch but came off eventually.

2 days of inhaling paint stripper (nasty stuff) and a day of sanding to finally have it ready for some colour!

Primed and ready to paint.

Updates to come as I make progress...

Awesome stuff Gness. Keep us updated!
I already love it like that! I love the primer grey/Bare metal LOL I'd even just wack gloss over it!...pretty exciting stuff :D
What colour are you thinking of doing it?
I dunno maybe like a chocolate/poo brown might look cool. Depends on the colour of the other parts.
Are you gonna paint rims and the other parts? Or buy new?:D

Awesome. Best way to learn about bikes I reckon!
I'm going to be boring and paint it matte black - I've always wanted a matte black bike! Unfortunately all the parts including the wheels are a write off and I've already thrown them out so I'm in the process of buying all the parts atm. Anyone have a 700C wheelset they don't need? :P
ukalipt - I didn't mind the red either, I actually tried to clean up the rusty bits only but ended up with patches of bare metal and it looked crap!
justin - It sure is - the whole process so far has been good learning curve and good fun too!
I finally managed to paint it a couple of days ago and the result was surprisingly good considering the only other thing I've painted was our interior walls! To be honest, during the preparation process I was thinking that it was such a pain and that next time I would get my frames blasted and powdercoated professionally. But seeing the results made me forget all that!

The paint obviously isn't 100% but it's good enough for a beater bike.

It was looking so bare I just had to put something on so I installed the threaded to threadless stem converter that I picked up from MC Cyclery a couple of weeks ago. The silver stands out like dogs balls atm, so hopefully as I add more parts it won't be as noticeable.

FARK ME! That's an awsome job!

If you're in doubt, paint it matte black.
Matte Black is the easiest out of all paints to get right (it's like applying primer). It's when you get into the gloss paints where it gets super hard. Smart choice I say, looks great!

Loving the paintjob!
looking hot warren..
how did you manage to get the cranks off?
Matt - at first I was just using the crank puller but they just wouldn't come off and it got to the point where I actually damaged the driver pin on the puller. Eventually managed to get them off by bashing it with a mallet whilst using the puller.
I completely forgot about this thread until now, so thought I'd post an updated pic of where the bike is now.
Just need to find some v brakes and it's done.

And yes, that is a suspension post because it was the only 26.4mm post I could find after months of searching! Who the hell uses 26.4mm posts?!

Nice! Massive transformation.
Thanks guys!
I know it's not a 'prestige' frame or anything like the other builds on the forum but the point of this little project was to learn about bike mechanics so in that sense it was a great success and I'm very happy with the result!
