This past weekend Lance Armstrong introduced two new custom-painted Trek Madones as part of his larger “Stages Art Tour.”
The Art Tour, spear-headed by Nike and benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), will include a variety of art mediums, not just Trek bikes, and draw from a pool of talent that currently includes 22 commissioned artists.
For its part, Trek has committed bikes to serve as canvases for some of these artists; (the exact number of bikes that will be revealed as part of the exhibit has yet to be determined). The artistic vision will come from the artists themselves; the execution will likely come from Trek’s Project One team and Trek’s internal design staff. In other words, the artists will develop the concepts; Trek will paint them.
The entire “Stages” art collection is scheduled to cumulate in Paris on July 16. The collection will then go on tour, visiting galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Portland, and potentially other venues. Eventually the collection will be auctioned off to benefit the LAF.
Please keep in mind that the “Stages Art Tour” is a Nike and LAF initiative and that Trek is serving in a supporting role. The prospect of Trek eventually gathering all bikes for an in-house or Trek-sponsored exhibit is uncertain. Also, these bikes are one-off rolling works of art and will not be offered in Project One.
“Stages” aside, much like we have done with the 1274, bear, and “triple-crown” bikes, Trek will continue to supply marquee athletes like Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador with our own in-house designed, custom-painted bikes. As Trek’s athletes compete in the world’s biggest races and on the world’s biggest stages, and as new products are unveiled for these races, expect to see more custom bikes that showcase our best-in-class products and Project One craftsmanship. Some of these custom paint schemes may eventually be offered in Project One. Stay tuned for more info….
