View Full Version : Opinions Needed - Specialized Enduro Comp SL
Hey all
Have been looking at buying a bike for Andrea, my girlfriend, and have come across a Specialized Enduro Comp SL. Specs are as below. Ideas, pros, cons etc. Andrea likes the way the Trance X2 rides and only really has a problem with the seat height so this bike would be for me.

Brakes: Avid Juicy 5. 203mm F, 184mm R.
Shifters: SRAM X7
Rear Drailleur: SRAM X9
Front Derailleur: Shimano LX

Pedals: Wellgo Magnesium
Crankset: Truvativ Stylo

Rear Shock: Specialized
New chain, rear cluster and middle ring.
Post away please :D

What year is it? What do you want to know about them? What sort of riding do you do? I have an 08 so can tell you about them but would help if I know what you're wanting to hear.
Its a 2007. I am more just wondering if the components on this bike are of a decent quality and that they are something i wont smash to bits in no time at all. I assume given its a pretty decent brand that i would get a few years out of it before i needed to upgrade again :)
I doubt Andrea would be able to fit on the large... standover height wise...
Specialized Enduros are awesome spec'd bikes :D

Don't mean to sound sexist but this is quite a rig for a girl that has little riding experience. I would recommend getting something lighter and more suited to light XC riding? My experience with taking girfriends riding are that they complain about lugging heavy bikes up hills, it can put them off for good...
And Miss Atherton, if you are reading this you are one of the exceptions. (Bows down...)
Doh - just realised that you are buying this for yourself. Didn't you just buy a new bike?
thats right, the bike is for me and i have just recently purchased a Trance X2, but i would like for Andrea, my girlfriend, to come out riding with me.
That being said, Andrea does like everything about the Trance bar the seat height so i will be buying a new seat and post to suit her if i get the Specialized.
I was wanting to buy a bike for Andrea but the Specialized may be a decent price and i figured it would be a nice bike for me. Its on ebay and is currently selling for under the $1000 mark, though i am sure that will change.
If people feel its an upgrade, or even an equivalent to the Trance, then i will certainly look closely at the auction come end time.

Ok, there's one there you do need to be aware of here... Specialized's own suspension can be expensive to service, particulalry the E150 fork that's on that model Enduro.
I'll give you an example. My 08 Enduro (had it for about 9 months now) went in for a general service 2 weeks ago. Now Specialized have stood behind this product very well considering all the flak they've copped since it was released in 2007. Originally the warranty was for 12 months, then I think they upped it to 2 years on the fork and shock. Not long after though they moved that out to 5 years... which is unbelievable IMO. Considering the reported number of failures out there that's pretty damn good. There's a catch... as with most warranties you must be the original owner and must follow their service schedule, part of which is to have the forks given an oil bath every 50 hours of riding which is basically making sure the seals are lubed, etc as these forks actually purge oil as part of their natural action, consequently it needs to be replaced.
Back to the service 2 weeks ago, took it in, explained what I wanted done, yep all good... no drama, see you in 2 days. Oh and by the way we notice that travel adjust is a bit tight, we'll check that out too. Sweet. 2 days later, phonecall from the LBS... that travel adjust is a cartridge replacement job, covered by warranty... just need your receipt. Sure no problem. Out of interest how much is that repair if I didn't have warranty - $750. Needless to say I dug that receipt out that night and wasn't leaving home without it. Shout out to the guys at that particular LBS too... service and follow up couldn't have been better.
The moral of the story is, you're taking a risk. In my personal view, that suspension is known to fail (it may already have had replacement 08 parts put on it as I have read that is what they generally do now for warranty jobs rather than use the old 07 parts). Without a warranty to back you, you could be in for some expensive repairs in the event of a failure. You might get away with it if you have the original purchase receipt, I'm not going to go there.
Incidentally, don't get me wrong... I love the Enduro... rides like a dream, never had any dramas with it and highly recommend it as a bike for All Mountain / XC work. Did the 5 year warranty play a part in my decision - absolutely. Wouldn't have bought it without that peace of mind.
A mate and I were talking about that particular auction this morning and I said to him, you'd buy it, ride it and if the forks break, you'd replace them with some single crowns.
Hope this helps... :)
You can read the warranty statement on Spesh's site here (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCGlobalPages.jsp?a=b&pageName=SuspGuar&minisite=10120&language=US).
am going to ask the guy a couple oif questions based on the post above. Lets hope the forks have been replaced :D Thanks for the advice
