Jarod: the 40d is perfect for what I mostly do. However I'm starting to find it's limitations in regards to iso and autofocus system. I do want a 5d mk2 but I don't think it really fits my requirements. I would need another body to compliment that. I'm just going to sit tight at the moment as there are lots of rumours going around at the moment. But deep down i will want a 1d mk4 when it comes out but weather I can justify the cost I don't know. I'm hoping canon brings out a camera to rival the d300.
I luv my 400 mm but I wish it was a 2.8 version but I don't have 10g to spend. It does the job but I use it alot for Motorsport opens up alot more different perspectives. But like u say nice gear is all well and good but u need to know how to use it. I should post some pics of my days with a 350d 18-55 and 55-250. That will bring back memory. I'll do that when I get home lol

Ps, I jest, I jest. Each equivilant Canon/Nikon body has 95% the featureset of the other. Much more difference is made by the glass that both companies put out. And even more difference is made by the photographer. Yeah!
A shot I am happy with, compositionally. Nikon 990 (I miss that camera, a lot).
I use a Nikon D70 (that needs a sensor clean bad) with a f2.8 70-200 VR (I love this lens) and the kit lens.
My girlfriend uses it with a 50mm f1.8 and extension tubes for macro stuff and has had some cool results.
I've had a photo the cover of Zoom as well as the poster when I was using a 70 - 300 Nikkor lens hehe.
I don't really shoot often these days though as I don't have the time, plus most of the work I used to do dried up when all the fast fours, zoom, hpi etc etc all merged under the same publisher, I'll try and pick out some of my favorite shots later, nothing amazing, just some good subjects and some ok photography.
