    Default DIY Bike Rack

    I was in need of a rack to store the road bikes in some order, I wanted a 4 bike rack like the Delta Botticelli but figured I'd fire up the power tools and make some sawdust.

    Figured pine was easy enough to work with and cheap. I could have used Tassie Oak but my carpentry skills aren't flash and why ruin a $30 piece of wood when I could ruin a $12 one.

    So, a few measurements on the back of a napkin (literally - I had take away Maccas the other day and got about 7 napkins) and then off to Bunnings.

    The base, sides, and "face" sheets are 190 x 19, with the sides being 2.4 in height. Bunnings of course use 2 standards of 2.4m hence the reason one is 50mm longer than the other. Oh well, out of a dozen lengths I picked the straightest. The "hook" is 40 x 40 glued and screwed to the face sheets with 70 x 12 over that. Whole heap of Liquid Nails and screws and voila. Also, I made a box with a hinged lid to keep the bike shoes and saddle bag in.

    Next step is to borrow a belt sander and tidy it up, then hit it with a stain and some oil. Then line the channels where the frame sits with some felt. Fairly happy with it, on the floor it stands nice and stable. It does weigh a bit though and it isn't the easiest shape to carry through the house.

    Here's some pictures of it holding 2 bikes but it will take 4.

    What were you expecting? Two hooks and the clothesline? Pffft...

    I'm thinking of adding a shelf for helmets and maybe another storage box for lights, inflator etc.

    Got hold of a belt sander tonight so tomorrow I should have the ratty ends smoothed off and ready to stain.
