Fixies: We know that some of you have gotten your feet truly wet. We love them, we ride them and we've sold a fair few of them in the past year.
We'd like to tempt the rest of you coasters into trying a fixed gear (and potentially loving it!). MCC are offering Bikes Move Us members either a Surly Steamroller or Salsa Casserole at near cost price. What's the catch? 1) We need at least 5 people to get the prices down. 2) You get the bike in the box and you have to assemble it yourself (it's easy!). 3) Limited colours and sizes available and they're not all in store so you'll have to find out what size is best for your body before ordering. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The bikes on offer are: Surly Steamroller ![]() Surly Steamroller complete ![]() Creamroller colour ![]() Surly Steamroller complete - we gave 2 of these babies away at the Sydney Bicycle Film Festival not too long ago. The one pictured here is the one Andy rolled away with. ![]() My own Surly Steamroller with a few personal touches. Click here to view pictures of Surly Steamrollers on Flickr from all over the world This bike doesn't need any introduction as it's respected world wide. From the Surly site: "Listen to veteran fixed gear riders long enough and they’ll start to wax philosophic about fixies, how the bike is an extension of one’s body, how the simplicity and the silence are pleasing to the senses, how riding one is at first unnerving and later addictive. As we have said since we introduced the Steamroller frameset, we won’t try to convince you that riding ‘fixed’ is better or special or why you should try it. You’ll have to determine that for yourself. But whether you’re old school or new hat, you’d be hard pressed to find a better canvas to build your ideal street machine. It’s made from Surly 4130 CroMoly steel because steel is durable and responsive, things we like and we’re pretty sure you do too. Its geometry is tight compared to road frames and relaxed compared to twitchy track frames. It takes big tires because big tires make sensetire casings flex before the frame. It’s got almost no ‘features’, no pump peg, no housing stops, no cell phone or GPS mount. Just a set of water bottle braze-ons. Well, it does also have a nice brazed fork crown we think looks pretty snazzy. If you’re like us, you may consider less tangible elements (such as ride quality) to be features, and it’s got these in spades. This is a frame meant for riding. Everyday. It was designed by cyclists for cyclists. It’s most at home on the street, but it’s also track legal and does a pretty fair job on trails too. It’s a fixed gear frame in the tradition of fixed gears, before there were freewheels or handbrakes (effective ones, anyway), harkening back to a time when big tires weren’t a design feature but a necessity, when a ride was an adventure But hey, don’t let us convince you. Try one out. It may just become your favorite bike." Available in 49cm, 53cm, 56cm, 59cm, 62cm (check for availability). 100% Surly 4130 chromoly steel, TIG welded, with butted tubing in the main triangle 100% chromoly lugged and brazed fork Ritchey Logic Comp headset Kalloy forged Stem (with 25.4mm clamp diameter - track bar size!) Aluminum handlebar Tektro R356 front brake/lever Silver Sugino cranks with a single 48T ring, 17T Surly fixed cog SRAM PC-48 chain Wheels feature Surly flip/flop rear hub, Alex DA22 rims, and DT Swiss stainless 14G spokes Maxxis Detonator 700x25c tires/tubes Kalloy seatpost with Surly Constrictor clamp Velo saddle Pedals not included The Deal: We've seen Surly Steamroller framesets (just frame and fork) sell for $750 (they are $895 RRP). The complete build is $1399RRP (recently inflated prices) but our group buy price is $999! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salsa Casserole ![]() From the Salsa site: "Simple and to the point, Casseroll Single gets you where you want to go with singlespeed gearing. A singlespeed road bike you say? Yup. We’re talking one gear that you pedal fast or slow, up hills and down, and all around town. Casseroll Single starts out with our extremely versatile Casseroll frameset. Crafted of Salsa Classico CroMoly, the frameset provides the resilient feel that steel is famous for. It feels good while you ride it! Designed around long reach brakes, the frameset allows you to run nice large road tires: 700c x 37mm without fenders and 700c x 32mm with full fenders. Big tires may add some weight, but we feel the extra comfort is well worth it while riding on rough roads or well-worn paths. Our partially polished, stainless steel, forward-entry horizontal dropouts make for easy chain tensioning. Interested in running fixed? Flip-flop the rear Surly New hub and add a track cog. Finishing touches include fender and rear rack mount braze-ons, and a pump peg. Fine, functional parts like Surly New hubs laced to Salsa Delgado Cross rims, long-reach Tektro 521 AG brakes R20 brake levers, Sugino RD2 singlespeed crankset with 48T ring, and Continental Contact 37mm tires keep you rolling. The WTB Silverado Race saddle with Salsa embroidery, Salsa Moto Ace Short & Shallow bars, and painted-to-match Salsa CroMoto stem top it off. Casseroll Single is all about riding while not fretting over what gear you’re in. Just roll up those pants cuffs, spin those pedals, and go somewhere. Enjoy the simple life, try riding single. Casseroll Single. Getting the job done…simply." Available in 45cm, 47cm, 49cm, 51cm, 53cm, 55cm, 57cm, 59cm (check for availability). I love both of these bikes. I really considered the Salsa for a bit (I love the paint and that it can be converted into a geared road bike too if fixed, or single speed isn't your thing) but the SE came up and I took it and that was that.
The Sugino crankset alone on both these bikes is $200+ (I've been looking at them for my SE lol).
