Well....here it is.
My new challenge! I wanted to build a fixed wheel bike, from an old 10sp junker, but didnt really want to spend anything doing it. I also didnt want to start with a beautifully preserved specimen from the back of someones shed, with the only fault being a bit of dust and a flat tire. So I sent a possee out to scour the Council clean up piles in search of a basket case bike for my re-build. What came back was quite shocking. The only place this thing belonged was back on the rubbish heap, but, that made it the perfect candidate for my project. It wasnt bent (on the frame anyway) and was probibly not a bad bike in its day, but it looks like it had been dragged out of a creek bed - see pics > [IMG] [IMG] Last edited by Greg; 21-01-10 at 09:57 PM. |

Dude, there is less rust on the Titanic. Are you sure that it's not structural? I know what you are wanting to do here, but there are plenty better bikes to start with out there. Can you get the bottom bracket out? I'm not sure there is a single thing worth salvaging on that bike

Have you factored in the price for a crate of nurofen when you do this restore?

Alloy crankset with integrated spider looks like it might be salvageable. Stem, handlbars & levers likewise.
Wheels might be alright (not to much brown rust on spokes). But as previously mentioned, the BB area looks cooked. Could be hard to service BB itself, and if that rust is structural and the bike collapses underneath you that nurofen will mos definitely be required. I reckon: Strip it for parts then scout some more for a less rusted frame. In my experience frames are easy to find, parts hard. |

Give it a quick lick of paint then put it on ebay as a "fixer-upper single speed project for the true enthusiast"
Use the proceeds of sale to find a frame that is not structurally compromised !
